American bishops call for better protection of places of worship
American bishops urge Congress to increase protection of places of worship from vandalism. Their appeal was supported by Jewish organisations, the Episcopal Church and Evangelical communities.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who heads the Episcopal Committee on Religious Freedom, proposes that the federal fund, which subsidises protection systems around places of worship, be quadrupled.
“Respect for human dignity also requires respect for religious freedom. We believe that ensuring that all Americans can practice their faith fearlessly is one of the basic duties of the federal government, ” Archbishop Wenski wrote in a letter.
In his opinion, this is especially important now, when extremism and hostility towards various religious groups or religion as such are on the rise throughout the United States.
