Janine Coponet who witnessed the murder of Father Hammel has passed away— aged 91.
Janine Coponet, a witness of the murder of Jacques Hamel, passed away on the 19th of April, at the age of 91.
The Diocese of Rouen stated that Janine Coponet passed away peacefully, on the 19th of April, surrounded by her loved ones. The woman belonged to the Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray parish in Rouen. She was attending the Mass celebrated by Father Hammel on the 26th of July 2016, when terrorists murdered the priest.
A year after the murder, the woman became famous for her testimony, saying, “We ask God to forgive, to help us not hate the terrorists. On the question of forgiveness, Jesus said on the Cross: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” “He asked the Lord to forgive—we do the same,” she said in an interview offered to Bien public.
Her funeral took place on the 28th of April, celebrated by Fr. Dominique Lebrun, Archbishop of Ruen.
